Nick received his B.S. from Brown University in 2011, where he worked with David Rand studying genetic epistasis between nuclear and mitochondrial genomes in Drosophila species. He also worked in Paul Schedl’s lab at Princeton University studying cell migration in developing Drosophila melanogaster embryos. From 2011 to 2012, he was a lab technician in Christian Eckmann’s lab at the Max Planck Institute for Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany, where he studied the regulation of translation in the C. elegans germ line. He later completed his PhD work in Kristin Scott’s lab at UC Berkeley, where he studied neural and molecular mechanisms by which the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster regulates food and water ingestion. In the Hoekstra lab, Nick is interested in using tools from molecular genetics and neuroscience to study the neural regulation of behavior in wild mice.
